wouldn't you, but no, not this little ducky.

So N+1 hit the trails last night for only the third time. I actually wasn't planning on riding and certainly didn't intend to take the new toy but as fate would have it I did both.

In that this was my first "build from scratch" bike I was very diligent with correct torques when putting the little baby together. I was also careful / thoughtful / paraniod enough to go over the bike thoroughly after both my previous rides.

Trees @ Terrey Hills

Craig there were 2 trees down on Perimeter track Sunday arvo.

One which almost covered the entire track, just enough for a bike to pass slowly, and the other smaller one that shouldn't cause too many problems.

Sorry I won't be able to join you, have a pest guy coming to top up my termite system.

Riding in the catchment area near Kanangra/Yerranderie

There appear to be a few tracks around the mining town south of Kanangra Boyd National Park. This area is in an SCA special area. However, the SCA says that bicycles may still be ridden on public roads in the special areas.

a. Is there any good riding around there?
b. Are there any 4wd tracks in the area which count as public roads?

Dirt Works 2008 - Terrain question

Hi there

A few friends and myself have enrolled in the Dirt Works 2008 and have little idea what to expect terrain wise. We are currently training on Manly Dam, Bantry Bay and surrounds but I was wondering if the actual race is going to be less technical and more fire trails.

Has anyone done it that could help? If it is more fire trails we could be better off training at Oxford Falls, cascades and that sort of thing instead.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
Dylan

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Hello again Nobmobs, it's Elly the Pommy Shelia. Managed to find somewhere to stay for my first month and arrive in Sydney on 30th January. My bags are packed and am so excited will barely be able to sleep tonight as get up at 5.30 tomorrow for my flight. But I digress.....

I am bringing my old Marin Muirwoods and its been serviced but all in pieces in a box. Please can any of you suggest a decent bike shop who will set it up for me. I'm staying in Manly so somewhere in the Northern Beaches area would be great.

Menai guided tour

A guy on Farkin posted about the huge number of riders at Menai yesterday. I replied that it was us. Anyway, he lives nearby and knows the area very well and he said that the area is awesome and next time we're there, he'd be happy to lead us around some of the best loops in the area. I like the sound of that.

Garmin Edge navigation?

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Hi,

I'm considering moving into the 21st century, having discovered the limitations of map and compass, and was wondering if we have any experienced Edge users who can attest to its functionality as a navigation tool. Specifically can you use it to help explore areas you've never been and will they get you home if you become completely disorientated?

I've heard vicious rumours you can use them to follow other people's tracks from, say, motion based, and suspect you might be able to create your own routes in say google earth/maps and then follow them?

Mysterious Downhill Course

Whilst driving from Hornsby to Galston one day I noticed some heavily protected downhillers walking their bikes up the road. Today I decided to check it out. Now about 500 metres west of the bridge I found what looked like a cycle path exit emerging from the forest just after a guard rail on the left hand side of the road while driving west. I walked about 50 metres along it and this does seem to look like the tail end of a down hill track. The track has has a lot of effort put into it at some point.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

SRAM/Shimano Derailleur/Shifter compatability

Is it possible to use an XTR or any other shimano shifter with a SRAM X.0 rear derailleur?

Does SRAM have 2 way shifters like the new shimano ones (i.e. thumb/index finger downshift)?

Whats the difference between derailleur cage lengths? what are the advantages/disadvantages of a longer/shorter cage length?

thanks

Newbie's Qs about Riding after Rain

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Hi NobMobbers, thanks for having me here. Recently I've developed the riding bug that has me wanting to ride trails everyday, regardless of the weather. Having said that, I haven't been out in the mud yet for 2 reasons: I don't want to clean my bike all the time, and I don't want to be responsible for wrecking trails.

What is the etiquette for riding after rain? How many days of sunshine should you leave after rain before riding again? Is there a service that can tell you track conditions or track closures?

Australia Day weekend ride

Hello hello!

I was just wondering if anybody would be interested in longer ride/ day trip on Australia Day weekend? Would love to do a long ride either somewhere we haven't been or somewhere fabulous we don't go often enough! (Maybe with some technical bits) Smiling

Would the ride you suggested in Belangelo qualify for that, Liam? And does anybody know the area around there (apart from picking up backpackers Eye-wink )? Or we could spend some more time at Menai, really loved it down there! Any other suggestions?

Either Saturday or Sunday would be my days of choice.

Happy rainy day!
Caro
