Single Speed mechanics

With all the rain, mud and drive train destroying sand, I'm contemplating getting a no nonsense single speed and keeping the Yeti for favourable conditions. -

The negatives of a single speed include climbing and limited top speed, while pondering these the idea came to me to make a 3 speed bike by having the single rear cog, fitting a chain tensioner, front derailleur and 3 chain rings?

Does anybody know if this is possible?

Andersons and Oaks situation???

Does anyone have any info on how good or bad Andersons and Oaks are after all this rain? I’m thinking of doing that this Saturday morning for a "training" ride.

Cheers,

Leo.

Sheldon Brown has passed away

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

I have just become aware that one of the great characters of the cycling world has passed away. He will be sorely missed, although at a time when old school is cool he will live on in every home built single speed or 'weird bike' as he called some of his creations. The following biog was lifted from wikipedia. His home page is http://sheldonbrown.com/home.html

Dorel Industries acquires Cannondale

http://newswire.ca/en/releases/archive/February2...

For those of you who may know, Dorel is a Montreal-based company that had previously acquired Pacific Cycle and GT. Pacific Cycle will be a separate division, no mention yet about whether the GT brand will be part of that division.

Hunter Valley single track

Heading up to the Hunter valley this weekend and keen for a Friday ride any suggestions or Google Earth directions or company would be most welcome. Me thinks there’s got to be some good stuff between the Cessnock turn off and the Hunter region.

First of all please excuse my lateness in replying to threads and personal messages - am having to get to Internet Cafes and this is my first visit to one since last week.
Here's the bad news which is making me start to believe that someone up there doesn't want me to ride anymore..... Yesterday I went to visit the worlds best Sports Physio - Joel Werman in North Sydney, Miller Street by the cricket Oval. He is the superb and sorted me out last year with a knee problem in one visit. His number is 9558766if anyone is unlucky enough to need him.

Bike lights

I've noticed there is a weekly bike ride at 17;30 or round about that time in terrey hills. Now i was wondering if you need a bike light for these rides. I looked into buying a bike light and have been shocked buy the prices. One store told me they start at $140 which is rediculus. So my question is do you need it?

If the answer is indeed yes

where did you get the bike lights from? How much did you pay and what do you recomend.

My fall back plan is to go down to dicksmith electronics and wireing up a few LEDs.

Information would be aprecieted, thanks.

Upgrade Stumpy to Enduro

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Hello all fountains of information.
A way in the future (depending), but I'm interested in any advice on the following:
I have a Stumpy 120 (Septune 120mm Fox shock) with a 140mm fork
After recently cactusing the shock link I had it replaced with a beautiful piece of engineering that allows the rear end 120-150mm of travel.
The bike shop said that they couldn't get 150mm of travel from the back as it would throw out the geometry of the bike.

riding Oxford Falls DH in Wet Conditions

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

With all this rain, I was out there yesterday and today with some mates doing general maintenance and fixing up some of the drops & landings, we were very surprised and disappointed to see riders (kids) hitting the DH trail given the current conditions.

Now the wood structures are no longer there means everything is made out of rock and dirt and when it rains heavily this stuff turns into soft mud. So when you ride on these features it makes a mess and damages the landings.

so could those that chose to ride the DH trail in the wet either

Pre-Dirtworks Sleep?

Sleep? I'm yet to get a decent night's kip before any of the Dirtworks. I end up laying in my tent knowing I must get a decent rest but somehow that never happens.

No that I'm trying to make you nervous or anything! Eye-wink

I don't suppose it much matters when you're crawling up climbs on Womerah Ridge anyhow. Eye-wink

All that said - if anyone wants to share rental house/cabin/etc. close to St Albans think I'd be in that!

Calling out to all the Ourimbah Nobmob regulars (you know who you are)
I have not been there yet but from the photo's I have seen lately it looks the goods other than the near vertical rock garden where even the racers crash think Ill be climbing down that section.
Thinking of the weekend of the 9th of Feb. weather permitting should be a good warm up for Thredbo on the 16th which I havn't posted up yet.
So if enough interest is shown buy the usual perpertrator's (especially the one with the blue ute ! LOL p.m. me) thats if they are not to busy practicing nappy folding LOL

Duck Centre Twice

Tien, Lozza and I are hoping to ride tomorrow morning. Given the rain Duck Holes and Centre tracks maybe our only option. We may do two laps of it...possibly go back up Duck Holes.

All very tentative at the moment given the weather so probably best to give me a call. Number is in my profile.

Technical help needed

Well my son's new bike arrived this morning a Jamis exile and I have it assembled but the rear derailleur (sram X7) doesn't have the spring tension needed in the lower leg to tension the chain.(the chain is the right length) I think I've fitted it correctly but have thought the spring tension could be adjusted or something, hopefully someone has had this prob before.
Thanks John.
