Cycling facilities in North Sydney under threat of removal

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

This will be of interest to most nobmobbers who use commuting to work in or around the CBD as training for their weekend rides on the dirt.

North Sydney Major Jilly Gibson appears to be developing a reputation for an anti-cycling bias.

Why is this important?
On 4 March 2013, North Sydney Council deferred the upgrade to the shared use path through St Leonards Park. On 8 April, Council accepted a petition from 80 people “opposing bicycles being allowed to use St Leonards Park, except when used for leisure”.

A big up to all the peeps (approx 20) who turned up in the rain yesterday to help out with some major earthworks and build work on the South Side trail. Tonnes of rocks and in-fill were moved to reinforce 4 key areas. Pics uploaded (sorry about iPhone quality) but you get an idea of the work completed.
Next official maintenance day is Sat 4 May 2:00pm. All welcome even if it's for an hour or two.
Pics from top down:
• Berm extension and re-grading (Blue trail)
• Tree roots now protected resulting in a new jump with widened berm on approach (Blue trail)

There is no trail fairy - OMV is in need of some lovin'

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Yes. That's right. There is no OMV trail fairy. So we need a couple of hours of your time if you are keen to help us maintain this great trail. If you have done this before, you'd know it is a great feeling to ride a trail you personally have had a hand in carving a berm or laying down rock armouring or trimming back plant growth.

OMV - The best place in the world?

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

How good is Old Man's Valley at Hornsby? I did a few laps there this morning then took my 9 and 12 year old boys there this afternoon. My 12 year old said it's "one of the best places in the world - like an amusement park but free!". And they both said now they can see why I'm so obsessed with mountain biking. It really is a great facility - I saw everyone from elite riders to guys on Huffys and parents with kids, but they all had one thing in common - they were smiling. Old Mans Valley is a fantastic example of a great MTB facility in the heart of suburbia, and great use of disused land.

Last Minute Trail Advice

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

So... I'm taking out a new rider this Sunday morning and I want to give her a great experience that turns her ON to biking, not off.

I rebuilt a vintage HT Cannondale F500 for her to use (not a big $ investment). She currently cruises around on a hybrid Giant and loves it, so she knows about gearing and braking and such. But she's never really been off-road.

Any advice on some beginner trails that would turn her to the light side of the force would be appreciated.

Things to consider:

1) I'm picking her up in Concord, so I'm thinking Sydney North would be a good area to ride.

OMV to start the day

Rode the track today for the first time. It really did live up to all the great reviews I've read, the Hornsby riders and council did an amazing job. Did the green, blue and black 3 times each and even though I'd classify myself as an intermediate rider, I felt confident (but not totally) after the 2nd time round and could make most of the obstacles, except a couple of the logs. The switch backs and bridges were angled perfectly.

Riding OMV when the trails are closed

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Well done to the several riders ignoring the trail closed signs and riding OMV this morning !!!

I'm sure the trail builders/maintenance crew, and the local council alike, will applaud your well thought
out descision to ride while conditions are unsuitable and the trails closed.

And judging by the fact they were riding expensive bikes, wearing lycra, jerseys and clips - you'd think
they would have know better...

There were "Trail Closed" signs all over the place, and even plastic meshing over some of the trail entry
points!!!
