Great Northern Road - How does it hold up in rain?

Hi,

I'm thinking of riding the 75km loop of Great Northern Road tomorrow. Does anyone know how it holds up under rain? Are there any creek crossing that might be high?

On that note, anyone have an update on the creek crossing heights on Andersons?

Cheers,
Kym

Got bored with the rain today. I really should have manned up and gone for a ride but lack of motivation had me editing this up instead.

Maintaining fitness and skills when trails are too wet to ride

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

What a pain in the backside this wet weather is! With the Mont in less than three weeks, just when I should be getting out and hitting up places like Manly Dam or Ourimbah to up the intensity, refresh the skills and get the brain in the groove, the trails are so sopping wet that rding off-road is impossible without taking weekends away like we did to Queanbeyan last weekend.

I'm planning on hitting up back-to-back intervals spin classes at the gym tomorrow morning, but this doesn't do a lot for bike handling skills - trying to bunny-hop or rail a berm is going to look kinda funny Sticking out tongue

Building my skills

Hi
I have just joined up and thought that this might be the place for some advice. A few months back I went on a beginner skills clinic run by a company in the Northern Beaches called Sydney Bike Skills. It gave me quite a bit of confidence and I have been having a great time mountain biking on various tracks, suck as Manly Dam, Duck Holes etc.

Sweaty eyebrows

Whenever I wear glasses riding (sunglasses) they either steam up or they get dribbles of sweat on them from my eyebrows.

This obviously defeats the purpose of wearing them as I cannot see anything through the misty, sweat marks.

Is there such a thing as glasses that do not mist up and have some sort of rubber eyebrow band built in to stop the excess sweat going on to the lens?

Hello

Hi everyone,

I've been lurking on here for a while and thought I would sign up and say hello. I moved to Sydney a few months ago from the UK and have been sampling the local trails (Manly Dam, Royal National Park & Blue Mountains) and am loving it (well except for all the rain).

I ride an grey Orange Five, so if you see me out and about say hello!

Opinions on tubeless kits

I'm running DT Swiss XR4.1d rims with Nobby Nic UST 2.1's, looking to ditch the tubes and wondering which kit is the best option.

The DT Swiss kit is reasonably priced and designed for the 4.1s, but has mixed reviews

The Stan's kit says it is compatible with 4.1s

Any suggestions / other options?

noob question about valves

Beginner noob question. Can I use a presta valve tube on a rim with an opening for a Schrader valve. also roughly much would an adaptor cost for my pump to use with a presta valve?

Thanks for any help

Looking to buy a small hydration pack, with a bit of cargo possibility (extra tube etc…),
and I can't make the choice in between the Camelbak Rogue or Fairfax.

Child friendly trails

Any suggestions on which trails around the northern beaches are particularly good for kids? My eldest daughter is 8 and really keen to get out mountain biking. We sometimes ride parts of the dam but in general it's too technical and hilly. Any suggestions on trails (possibly around Terrey Hills) which are not too hilly and non-technical (but challenging enough for an 8 year old.

cheers

lost pump - Manly Dam on the W/E 18th 19th

Don't suppose anybody found a pump somewhere on the Manly Dam track not last weekend, the one before (18th/19th). I had it at the top (Wakehurst parkway) as I used it to pump up the spare tube - not sure if I left it there or lost it out of my bag on the way down to the bottom. It's one of those ones with a little metal flip out that can be used as a foot stand- 'Air' something is the brand - I can give more details if you found it.

Cheers

I rode some of the the XC trails at Ourimbah on friday and I am in love. The trails down there have everything our trails (Glenrock and Awaba) dont have. They have drops, step downs, jumps, bermed corners, difficult technical sections and rock gardens as part of the flowing trail, the kind of stuff you used to find on our trails before they were "sanitised". It is more like riding raw natural trails rather than man made groomed trails that cater to the masses. They also have a downhill track that is rideable by mere mortals in the same complex.

Some of our ride from the weekend trip.

Benj and Ethan swapped bikes, Ethan not having ridden a dually before and Benj (wearing the camera) wanting a refresher on what a hardtail was like. This is part of the result:

What happens when you take cycling seriously

An interesting article in Saturday's AFR on NZ's efforts to provide facilities for cyclists and the effect it can have on the economy.

The 18 “Great Rides” comprising the New Zealand Cycle Trail will span the country and are designed to be conquered by biking dynamos and amateurs alike. When completed early next year, it will provide 2300 kilometres of trail, linking up with other largely on-road cycling routes and giving tourists more opportunities to cover the country by bike.

Looking to get more riding in - any volunteers?!

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

I've been riding offroad for years, but after returning from Asia in mid '10, I find I'm not riding nearly enough, and mostly alone. I ride a bit on the Saturday TORC ride, Duck/Centre, the odd Anderson/Oaks etc and 1-2x/week roadie commute - but not nearly enough, and I have too many excuses to not ride when the alarm goes off early if it's just me! Got to get off my lazy a$$...

As you may be aware next Sunday is Clean Up Australia Day.

Nifty and I have been in touch about cleaning up some of the crap in the bush at Wallaroo and eventually he came across the East Seaham Clean Up Australia Day Group. We've been told that the NPWS ranger will be attending and there will be a skip at the end of Lone Pine Rd (which is one of the main roads through Wallaroo for those not familiar with the area).

Soft tissue swelling (sit bone area)

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Has anyone ever had the issue of the soft tissue around the sit bone area becoming really swollen?

I did a 7 hour mountain bike ride today and its swollen to the size of about 1/2 an egg. I only ever get issues with my left side? Occasionally I think I might get an ingrown hair or something because I can get like a tiny pimple that it extremely painful. Maybe the two are related because again, its only ever my left side.

Think my next bike will be carbon

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Just saw this and that really settles the carbon debate for me, was always worried about rock strikes but if you can do what they do to it in these tests there is no way you will break it in normal XC riding.
