Rear Shox

I was wondering what people think about rear shocks for XC bike. Rock Shox vs. Fox Shox vs. Fusion vs. any other ones.

Lights for night rides

I'm interested in doing a night ride but currently don't have a light.

What lights do you guys use and what would you recommend me to get as first purchase that doesn't blow the budget.

Looking for bike to rent/borrow for the day

Hi everyone, a bizarre request here. I have a mate from England visiting me for a couple of weeks, and we were thinking of going for a ride in the Blue Mountains. The unfortunate thing is that he needs a bike for the day. We will probably do the oaks or maybe Narrow Neck or something. I was wondering if anyone has a spare bike lying about that they might like to rent out for the day and make a bit of cashola. Happy to leave a drivers licence/passport or money deposit as security.

Cheers

Anyone need thorn-proof tyres?

Just got an email from a mate of mine in Zimbabwe, who is constantly fighting the battle against thorns, and searching for the ultimate thorn-proof solution.

He thinks he's found it:

"After many years off trying various tyres; Tubeless and Tubed… I now pronounce the toughest tubeless tyre in the world to be the Maxxis Crossmark tyre ….

This (see photos) was found under the mud after washing this afternoon… I remember a bit of a hiss about 8 kms from the finish yesterday… I thought it was just another of many thorns.

New to Sydney

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Hi everyone,

I moved to Sydney at the start of the year and am looking for people to ride with! I'm living in Marsfield and have just been riding firetrails in Lane Cove National Park near Brown's Waterhole end around to Cheltenham, the other end to South Turramurra and also found some more bush around West Pennant Hills/Westleigh. Otherwise I've just been riding bike paths and roads to Homebush and Nth Parramatta (so Lake Parramatta is probably within range for a ride.)

BMX Lumber-jacks

yesterday while walking my local trails with my dog ,on a section of single track I came across an area wear local kids have been building BMX jumps this does not worry me except that along with this they had hacked down about 13 gum trees indescriminately some of these trees would have been 60 foot high ,the place is a mess ,combined with heaps of litter laying everywhere ,I can't believe the mentality of these people (or lack of) I called the local ranger who is going to go there and have a look at this vandalism but it is unlikely that these people will be found unless caught in the act,I a

Menai (Lucas Heights) Closed to the Public

**MENAI (LUCAS HEIGHTS) is officially OFF LIMITS to MTB's**

Terrible news for MTB riders: The area at Menai (aka Lucas Heights) has been closed to any kind of public access, which of course now means MTB riding there is banned.

This looks to be a very serious move, with signs erected and riders reporting federal police are now patrolling the area.

Sorry to report this everyone - it was a great area Sad

See MENAI (LUCAS HEIGHTS) is officially OFF LIMITS to MTB's thread for more info.

Update 4/7/11: Having spent all day chasing the matter, Steve Mowle has managed to convince the ANSTO management to meet with Mountain Bike riders to discuss the use of Menai. This is an outstanding achievement. Please show your support and attend the meeting if you can - see ANSTO/Rider Meeting (Re: Menai Closure).

Update 4/7/11: Correction: Sorry folks - this is not a public meeting. Please do not show up! Those who go will be sure to report back though.

FOUND: Bike computer

When out walking Manly Dam yesterday at Allambie, my young bloke found a nice wireless bike computer head unit that has obviously come off someone's handlebars.

If it's yours and you can describe it accurately, please send me a PM or contact me on the mobile number in my profile.

Will be putting a note up on the trail, but it will be a few days away as I'm trying to fend off the dreaded lurgy at the moment. Sad

Manly Dam Track Works - Allambie Heights - 4-8 July 2011

Simon, Singlespeeder, Hawkeye and Hawkeye Jnr spent a few hours today looking at the Allambie trail section from 19th Hole to Cootamundra Drive/Monserra Road. If you were naughty and had been riding there today you will have noticed lots of yellow spraypaint on the ground by the side of the trail.

The circles with crosses through them will be where the contractor places large rocks to corral riders and - we hope - stop trail widening.

It was surprising how long it took. The key issue was to confine the track while both reducing speeds and maintaining trail flow.

Spoke tightening

I've noticed I've got a couple of spokes that aren't as tight as the rest.

What's the procedure for tightening them? Is it as simple as taking the tyre and tube off, gripping the nipple and tightening the screw? Only reason I ask is that I don't want to pull the wheel out of true.

Dam conditions today.

It rained a lot last night here in E Subs.

Assume the Dam should therefore be given a few days rest???

Anybody have any insight?

Suspension stuff up?

A few months ago I serviced my own forks. Not too hard following the instructions & with great result. There is one result that I'm actually very happy about, but it is a stuff up. That is, when my 'lock out' is on, my forks are quite stiff, but the suspension still works.

So now I have two settings. Instead of 'on' or 'off' like it's designed to be, it's 'on' or '70% off' which I think is BRILLIANT! Just what I wanted. So, how did this happen? How can I make sure this happens again next service!

Just got this in

The BNSW Environmental Trust Video Competition invites budding film makers from across Australia to create a 5 minute video to promote bike riding as a sustainable, healthy and environmentally friendly form of transport and recreation.

There are lots of ways to get started, for example, you can use a helmet cam and filming your trip to work or school, or you can do a full production, it is up to you and remember your film does not have to have a dialogue.

Response from the mayor

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Just thought I'd share a quick note I received (to my surprise) from the Warringah Council mayor Michael Regan. I sent an email to council after the recent trackworks lamenting the lack of consultation, and got a fairly detailed and good response letter from Michael Keelan (Manager Parks, Reserves and Foreshores). I replied thanking them for the reply and expressing my confidence that things are looking like improving in terms of communication between council and the mtb community. This was the mayor's response:

Lake Parramatta

Can anybody advise what street contains the most northerly spot you can drop into the Lake Parramatta Reserve (or any linked bushland)? I did a wet weather ride along the M2 detour cycle way recently and now realise that the cycle way along North Rocks Rd runs alongside the Reserve. I'm hoping that it mightn't be too far to link the top end of Devlin's Ck track in LCNP with Lake Parramatta for a mainly dirt ride one day - that's if it ever gets dry enough for me to want to ride off road again....
