Tyres for a commuter

Hi everyone. Got a question got an old marin hardtail (and i guess a hardfront as well, not sure what to call that lol) and ive got 26x2.0 tyres on it. I wanna make it a commuter and the tyres ive got are horrrrrible!!! So the question is if the rims are for 2.0 how narrow can i go?

And any suggestions for cheep and cheerful slicks?

Thanks

Punishment in the Capital

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Did the 50km Capital Punishment on the weekend as my first ever race and was pretty happy with my time despite dropping about 20 places on Stromlo as my legs stopped working and started cramping.

What i wanted to know is, was that bloody hard or was it just me? The sucking mud and clay felt like riding on flats for 40km and that last small pine forest just before Stromlo was like wading through a swamp. I must have seen about 10 people fall over going up the mountain as well, purely from fatigue.

Ourimbah after rain - 29/05 ?

Does anyone know the condition of the Ourimbah XC track? I'd planned to head up there today, but I'm unsure whether all the rain in Sydney last night made it there as well.

Anyone able to confirm?

Cheers,
Scott.

Awaba – single speed gearing

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

I am relatively new to the world of single speed riding. But I have entered into the Rocky Trail enduro at Awaba in July. I convinced a mate to join me, and given his complete lack of riding opted for the 4hr solo effort. So given the short(er) format I thought go the SS. I understand there is a bit of a hill to deal with so I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions re gearing?

By way of reference I am currently running 32*18 and am happy completing the dam - current SS best lap being 32min 2 sec.

This week's round-up

In case anybody hasn't noticed it's been raining a lot in Sydney this week, with the forecast of worse to come no wonder the ride calendar is looking a little bleak too Sad

In fact, hairylittlehobbit asked, "Anywhere to ride?" Maybe the answer is to get a fancy wind trainer or just take a ride on the couch after grabbing a DVD or two from this awesome trailers thread.

Looks like the best bet for a decent ride will be out of town, so best wishes and good luck to all those heading South for the inaugural Capital Punishment event. Initially everyone was keen as mustard for this but the reality of a 7am start in Canberra winter might be hitting home with numerous entries hitting the classifieds. Grab yourself a late entry and head down for tomorrow's race if you can! Mind you, things might be bleak there, CookPassBartridge asked about wet weather gear but Morgan doesn't think the weather will be that bad Eye-wink

It's hard to not notice that NSW Tourism are promoting the state with MTB. Their campaign is in print and on billboards around the city. Sadly Sydney in particular isn't the riding mecca we'd like, but Sally Barnes gave riders hope with her reply to a few emails that have been sent. Keep up the campaign guys - let's get some real change! Smiling

Elsewhere on Global Riders GTA are having a Saturday dig day at Glenrock and point out Round 5 of the HMBA XC and DH Series is on at Awaba this Sunday. The guys from BMORC are going to hit up some sweet Oaks single track loops on Sunday. Take care at the Oaks guys - Jeff shared some of his surgeon's handywork - ouch!

We're at least 6 years behind Brisbane!

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

I stumbled across the below on the worldwide intrawebs. Some really good points here on sustainable trails and access, all sounded very familiar, except that it's from 2004. Top that off some of the outcomes reached are stated to have taken 3 years to complete - that put's us almost 10 years behind what was achived working with Brisbane City Council !!

Good read, a few very relevant points that apply to us locally. No slides attached though, sorry...

DIY Servicing

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Not to sound cheap (because really I am) but the cost of servicing my beloved is more than servicing my Subaru!!

Without mentioning LBS names, but some places charge up to $230 for a full service and thats without brake, drivetrain and shock servicing, which is all I need really.

So my question is, is whether there is anyone out there that has converted the garage/shed/outback loo/treehouse etc to a workshop and knows enough of the know to help service a few of our rigs and also teach us some jedi mind tricks in the process involved with it.
All for a competitive fee of course ...

NSW Tourism promoting MTB ?

NSW tourism holding MTB as a reason to visit? Very much at odds with the infrastructure, regulations and support. I was so surprised to see this full page ad in the SMH - its not as if we are Rotorua. I've sent this to Mr Sartor et al , and included the premier encouraging acceleration of their support.

Perhaps some more letter/email writing at this time could help, esp since Aussies are doing so well around the world, it gives some momentum for change.
