OK folks - does anybody have a definitive way to wash cycling clothes and packs so they don't continually smell like ... well whatever that disgusting smell is.

Her indoors suggested something must have died in the wardrobe where all my clothes and packs and stuff are stored. It does indeed niff noxiously when the doors are opened, and despite investigation to try and find a dead rodent to blame it on it does seem to be the collected fragrance from a large number of tops, nicks, gloves and socks, all of them deposited in the wardrobe following a wash.

M975 (XTR) or M775 (XT) brakes - thoughts?

I've got some money burning a hole in my pocket at the moment (not really) and I've come across a fairy good price on both M975 and M775 brakes.

These are going on a XC (single speed) project bike. Not massively fussed about weight. Looking for the 'better' brake (durability/adjustability etc).

From what I can tell the M975 has been superseded M985/M988.

Is the newer XT with 'servo wave' (whatever that is) better than the 'old' XTR? They look surprisingly similar to me.

Manly Dam Closed 7-11 February 2011

Just in from the Rangers...

Good Afternoon Bike Riders,

We have engaged contractors to undertake vegetation trimming along the single use sections of track, and this work is scheduled to take place during the week of 7-11 February 2011. Due to the use of power tools and the narrowness of the track, the track will need to be CLOSED while work is in progress for the safety of both riders and contractors.

Works are scheduled to take place between 7:30am and 4:00pm on the following days/locations and riders will need to plan alternative routes as access will be blocked. The contractors have been asked to clear all debris from the track at the end of each work day so early morning and late afternoon riders should not be inconvenienced, however all care should be taken.

Monday the 7th and Tuesday the 8th on the track in the southern section of the park between Seaforth Oval and Wakehurst Parkway Fire Trail

Thursday the 10th and Friday the 11th on the track in the northern section of the park between the turn off from the fire trail below the Roosevelt Avenue tennis courts at Allambie Heights and King Street, Manly Vale.

We appreciate your cooperation.

Kind regards,
Manly Dam Rangers

The Dam: Planned Track Maintenance

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

I know it is positive to see resources allocated to the upkeep of the Dam but I really hope this doesn't open these sections right up. As I see it, the problem with clearing too much vegetation from the sides of the track is that it then makes it very easy for people to steer around difficult sections, which leads to track widening and more dumbing down of the Dam.

Good Afternoon Bike Riders,

Hi guys,

Anyone has ever been in or around the Bents Basin state conservation area?
Link to Google Map

What is nice, is that you can have a swim there, there is a deep waterhole, part of the Gulguer Gorge on the Nepean River between Camden and Penrith.

Noisy Pedalling

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Can anyone tell me why I get noise from my bike when peddaling under pressure i.e. uphills or hard along flats.

I have just replaced cassette, chain, BB and cranks and pedal arms. A bolt on the dual suspension link was loose, fixed!

I have looked for a frame break, none apparent. The noise seems to be in the crank area below my head.

Where is this noise coming from? How can I work that out? What could it be? I am at my wits end, help please?

bandy bandy

I know its not really bike related, but I saw another one of these on a ride at Terrey Hills.
I almost rode clean over it and when I did pull up next to it it didn't even flutter.....until I touched it!!!
It then started to move in a wave motion which looked amazing.
I also saw heaps of ghekkos, a scorpion!!!! and big ass grass hoppers everywhere.

Shoe comfort?

Hi All

I just thought I'd get a second opinion rather than living with something I don't have to (let's face it, we've all done that before)

Is it normal to get numb and uncomfortable feet after only 30km or so? Loosening off the straps and wriggling a bit helps but it's still there. It's been the case across 2 pairs of shoes so I doubt it's that. Could this be related to cleat position or is it normal and I should just HTFU?

thanks in advance
danny

Ourimbah lap length?

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Hi All

I just wanted to see if anyone has a wheel-sensor measured lap distance from round 1 of CCOMTB. My Garmin reported about 8.5km, Logan's about 7.4 and the word on the day from the club was that it was about 10km. I could imagine the GPS wouldn't pick up the extra distance from all of the ducking and weaving in the single-track as it has a slower sample rate but I'm intrigued what the real distance is. I might have to get me one of the wheel speed and cadence sensor units for about $50.

SPOT GPS

Hi Mobbers,

This is very cool little device I got the other day to take with me. It's not for everyone but if you need a satellite based communicator, this is really cool. Basically I got caught out with no cell phone reception and also ran out of battery (by running GPS software on my iPhone). Needed to communicate with family and I was stuck. Wife was not happy / worried after arriving late.

This thing allows you to SEND a message by SMS and email (with link to google maps) your location via GPS satellite.

Some options include:

Disc break stuck on

As the title suggests, went for a ride yesterday and about 10km into my ride my rear brake stuck on, made pedalling very difficult Eye-wink Couldn't free it any more than half a turn, tried forcing the pads back but it made no odds. It eventually locked up completely again and my legs couldn't take any more so I took the pads out and completed the ride with just the front.

So two questions, what caused this and how to fix it? Would be nice to have fixed it whilst out on the trail.

Brakes are Avid Juciy 5's on Treck EX8

Cheers

A quick report from our pointscore officer and timing chief,

A great day of racing was had today. The new XC co-ordinator endeared himself to all A, B and C grade riders by not including the climb up Camelback - many thanks Rossco! Just a few points from todays race:

Beware Firmware Update 3.3

I've just uploaded firmware update 3.3 to my Garmin 705.

It's just wiped all my screen preferences, and no longer reads the previously saved history files.

Not impressed. Sad
