Garmin heart rate straps

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

I have been using the same light weight Garmin heart rate strap for a while now and recently its started dropping out and not recording during rides. I replaced the battery before the weekends ride and it worked OK until I got it wet. Then it stopped completely and wouldn't work on the Sunday.

After reading the manual and seeing its rated to 30m I tried it again last night and it worked again. Anyone seen this type of intermittent behaviour before?

This is the ride where it stopped completely.

Ay Up Upgrades

Just in case you're not aware, Ay Up are upgrading existing light sets (100 customers a week). Sent mine off a week ago and they were returned yesterday with new LEDs, upgraded resistors and new all-round lenses. I'm not totally sure of the output but it must be around 1200 lumens for the double set. So far only had a play in the garden but very impressed with the brightness and spread of light. In fact, I would seriously wonder why you would need anything brighter for night time riding.

Long Trail Hill - best line?

Place : The last big hill before the loop end of long trail - I have only managed to ride this a few times without putting a foot down. It is so loose I just can't seem to get any traction. The times that I have made it in the past I first head right and then traverse left on the first steep part. After that I can make it. Now I try this line all the time, but still have low percentage of success. Maybe my Crossmarks are just too worn - how are you guys going with it?

Tips for climbing

I'm looking for some tips on climbing hills. Im riding Cascades 4 gates at the moment to build fitness. I find on the Quarry track hill that I'm changing down the the lowest gear at about 1/2 way. I tend to stay in the saddle the entire way up the climb; trying to spin harder at the erosion bumps. I just dont have the leg strength to keep it up though. I have tried standing up but tend to get the back wheel spinning under load.

I'm riding a 2010 Giant Trance X2 and the lockout does help.

Any tips?

Workshop on Bike repair and maintenance

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Does anybody know of anywhere you can learn more about Bike repair and maintenance?

I can get by with the normal wear and tear stuff and have even dabbled in some fork maintenance with a little assistance from a mate who knows a bit himself. But I would like to learn more and become a little more handy. Amatuer mechanic maybe?

I am sure LBS's won't be planning events that effect their bottom line, but there must be somewhere?

I know some clubs in the UK hold regular classes at night over a few pints. Seems like a really good idea! er the classes that is.

Neck protection

Hi Mobbers,
Got the pressure suit, gloves, knee and shins etc. and looking at safety gear for neck protection. My son 14yo does DH and has FFace helmet etc. And I have been to TBSM site to have a look at neck protection. Looks like there has been a few developments with this over the last 6 months or so with the availability of "Race Collar" rather than the large full on neck braces. Cheaper too. Any comments from you guys would be appreciated.

Sydney North Forum

All, there is some disappointing news to share here, but perhaps we can turn it into a positive.

It has come to my attention that the Colong Foundation has questioned the validity of forums NPWS set up last year as part of the submission process for their mountain bike discussion paper[1].

... The Colong Foundation for Wilderness has today called for the results from these public meetings to be thrown out and for National Parks and Wildlife to explain why it granted such a sensitive task to a mountain bike advocate and who is also involved in building tracks.

Mr Anthony Burton, the facilitator of the bike forums for National Parks and Wildlife appears to be a mountain bike advocate and consultant...

NB: It seems NPWS will only put on these forums if there is enough demand. So I would discourage people from contacting NPWS to confirm their attendance in the hope some of these meetings might not even happen. Call your local NPWS office or the venue a few days before the meeting you'd goto and confirm if it is on if you are interested in attending.

sunnies :(

So sometime last Sunday I lost my Rudy Project Golf with a smoke lens somewhere near Castle Hill or Stanhope Gardens, and didn't realise it until yesterday...probably lost all hope of ever finding them.

I like them a lot...light, single lens design and the lens have air vents to prevent fogging....that and they look awesome Smiling I'd get another pair if they weren't discontinued Sad

Can anyone recommend another pair/brand of a similar design? (light skeleton frame, single lens)

Disc brake bleeding kits

Does it make much difference what bleeding kit is used?
I've seen some Shimano specific ones, as well as some Universal kits, and I'm not sure which I should buy.

saving weight - where to start?

Hi all,

been thinking of trimming some weight off my bike (Spesh FSR XC comp). where's the best place to start looking to make the most difference? best changes from cost/benefit perspective? ideally i would like to take 1-2kg off the bike. would i be able to feel this difference out on the trail? i'm thinking wheels or fork. it will be a gradual process as it's probably going to cost lots of $$$. maybe i should have bought a better spec bike to start with.

Thanks guys and gals

Queensland Rides?

Im heading off next week for a holiday in Queensland. Will be spending 1 week in Hervey Bay and 1 week on the gold coast.
I was thinking about taking mine and my girlfriends bikes.
Does anyone know of any rides to do in these areas?
Is it even worth taking them along?

Chain keeps coming off big ring over bumpy ground...driving me mad...Help!!

Hi,

I ride a Scott Spark and whenever the going gets bumpy....downhill at the dam....section down to the hydro lab etc, my chain comes off the big ring in the front. I have checked the length based on the guidance in Zen an d the art of MTB maintenance and am happy that it is correct (one link overlap big cog to big cog without derailleur).

What else can it be?? Any ideas would be appreciated!

Garmin Edge 305 battery replacement

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

I noticed that the battery life on my Garmin Edge 305 had (over the last three years) dropped to about 6 hours from the 12 hour typical battery life that it is meant to have when new. 6 hours is not enough for a 100km enduro race or a 24 hour race.

I found this website

Non-UST tyres on UST rims?

Hi there,

I'm interested in buying some Fulcrum Red Metal 1's and have noticed on the instructions that you must only use UST tyres on these tubeless wheels.

Without getting into whether I should be tubeless or not Eye-wink, why couldn't I use inner tubes and normal tyres on these rims (assuming I remove the tubeless rim valve, etc)?

Also, if anyone has had any experience of these wheels, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

Thanks!

- Warren.

Real Insurance XCM Series - NSW

So this is interesting, basically they are going to have a NSW XCM Series which utilises the best events in NSW including Dirtworks, Capital Punishment and Angry Doctor.

The series will allow you to compare where you sit within NSW in the XCM discipline. Pretty interesting stuff I think.

I am already entered into CP and DW and was looking at the Angry Doctor anyway, so may as well cover the other race and see where I end up at the end of the year in the Series.
