1 1/4" stem?

So I have got the new bike but it comes with a tapered steerer from 1 1/2" to 1 1/4". Not much luck finding a stem that size so I can swap out the OEM part. Does anyone know of any 1 1/4" models. The best solution I could find was a FSA OS120 that comes with a shim to reduce to 1 1/8"

Stolen: Vassago Jabber Wocky

Bernd's Jabber Wocky was stolen last night from Neutral Bay. It was locked to his ute, lock cut etc.

The bike is white with gold Loaded Components bar and bits. There's pics somewhere on here..... http://nobmob.com/node/13618

It is a fairly unique looking bike so any one seeing it should be pretty sure it's Bernd's.

Please pass any info on to Bernd 0417 094 367 or Me 0413 233 244.

Manly Dam Volunteer Trail Maintenance Returns!

After being put on hold since 2008, volunteer trail maintenance is at last about to return to Manly Dam.

The first day will be this Saturday 8 September 2012 from 9am-3pm.

Numbers are limited, and will be on the basis of first in, best dressed. Smiling

You will need to complete and sign some paperwork, and attend a short safety briefing at the start, so being punctual will be important (note to self!).

BBQ afterwards courtesy of Trail Care.

Please RSVP to Spindog (http://nobmob.com/user/2162) with name, email address and mobile phone number.

Pretty close to ordering new fork and shock, as per previous posts.

One thing Id like to get some more advice on is rear shock size for 2012 Trance adv 1
Currently the factory shock is a Fox 7.250 x 1.750 XV (high volume)
The 'boost valve' model i want only comes in 7.5 x 2.0 (both high and std volume)

Mount Annan lap distance confusion

Hi,

According to the Mt Annan enduro trail map at http://www.rbgsyd.nsw.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_f... the full lap of the trail is 4+3=7km. However, looking at the results of the Round 3 Shimano MTB GP and calculating the distance from my average speed and time the lap comes to 12km. Have they made a mistake with the average speed calculation or is it actually 12km? Would be good to know whether I did X or 12/7*X km...

My Italian Stallion (N+1)

I picked her up this afternoon and took her a spin around Sydney park, first impressions are great.

The real test will be this weekend on the trails, I see there is a club race at Yellowmundi, which is tempting.....

Edit: It's a Bianchi Jab 29.1 with the fork upgraded to a RS Reba.

to clip or not to clip

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Hi All,
I am very new to mtbing and after years of sitiing on the couch its time to plunge in and get involved. I have a new bike which I very grateful for the dual suspension as these old bones are having issues, but my question is to get more out of the bike do I go to clips or not? Very concerned as to falling and not been able to get my feet out quick enough.

Cheers

Council Elections

I wouldn't ever want to be a one-issue voter (the P.U.M.P. Party lives on), however does anyone know who the candidates in the Warringah Shire Council election are who are supportive of mountain biking on the Northern Beaches?

Oldandslow, are you standing?

Relax its not a "which tyres should i use" question. Just curious if tyres have a shelf life. i dont want to put some on my bike in a tubeless set up, that ive had for a few years and they blow up on me.

Touring

Hi gang.

I've never been touring / bike camping before but ive been thinking about grabbing some panniers for the bike and heading off for a night or two. Just locally in the mountains region to start with some overnighters to get gear figured out etc and building up from there I guess.

Most of the rides I've got in my head will be predominantly Tarmac and gravel roads.

So basically I'm here asking for ideas, tips, recommended rides and to hopefully enlist some other keen cyclo campers.

Here's what I've got in my mind...

Ride 1:

Mount Victoria - Coxs River Campsite.

Sticking brake issue

Hi all, out on a ride this morning I had my rear brakes decide to stay locked on after descending a steep hill. It took a few minutes of trying to wriggle the pads in the caliper and rotating the wheel back and forth before it finally let go. Any ideas what would be the cause of this? Bike hasn't been ridden much of late, Elixir CR Brakes.

XX1 dinner plates!

A while back there was some talk about the SRAM XX1 1x11 system.

Well - I thought some might be interested that I had my hands on this stuff in the flesh today and man... that cassette is HUGE.

I really don't like the look of this and reckon 2x10 is gonna be a lot better bet for most people (in fact, 3x10 still seems very popular too).

Ideas on suspension setting

Hi all,

I recently put a set of 120mm RS Reba solo air on my bike. On my local trail, lake parra, I don't seem to be using all the travel. Maybe about 100mm. I am fairly lightweight and I don't do any big jumps. Question is should I be getting full travel on every ride? If so, what can I do to achieve this? I am running about 15-20% sag. The pressure to achieve this is already 20 psi less than what is recommended on the fork. Should I go lower pressure to try to get full travel? Other adjustments available are low speed compression and floodgate. Any ideas?

Thanks

MTB in Tassie

The wife and I are off to Tasmania for a ten day road trip in a couple of months time and I'm allowed to take my bike Smiling

Has anyone done any rides over there that they could recommend or have any links to websites showing trail maps? The Tassie Trails site seems to be a good place to start but there are very few gps traces.

Good deal for $2500?

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

So here is the deal.

The Minister for Finance has opened up the purse strings and given me a budget of $2500 max for a bike upgrade (gross not nett).

I am just under 6ft 4in, tip the scales at the 95kg mark and ride mostly Sydney trails (AM/XC) with the odd race thrown in. I currently ride a Giant XTC but the doctor says my back is f'd so I need to invest in a dually to help with cushioning. The best deal I have found so far on a new bike is a Giant Trance X0 2012 for $2800 which is over budget.

Demo days

Does anyone know of any bike shops doing demo days in the next few weeks?
I know there is a Trek demo day at Ourimbah next Sunday morning but wondered if there was any more coming up?

Unfortunately my LBS doesn't do demo bikes as they're not a big enough shop.

Schwalbe: TL snakeskin or Tubeless?

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.
Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Never being one to turn away from saving a bit of weight on the bike, especially in the rotating mass wheel dept I'm thinking of replacing my tubeless Schwalbe Ro Ro / Ra Ra's with their latest, lighter TL ready versions when they are worn out.

As the normal TL Schwalbes are a bit delicate, especially in the sidewall dept I'm tempted to go for the snakeskin versions however I have heard that this addition makes the whole tyre stiffer with less compliance to the surface. In other words a different feel & possibly less grip.

Endurance Info

I am currently training for my first solo 8 hour in November. I've been searching the net for a few months now trying to get some 'tips' for endurance events, but I'm not finding a lot of info. A small 3-part series by Mark Fenner has been handy for training.

Anyone know of any good mtb specific websites or books? 'Ed Rides Bikes' is a great read, but not a whole lot of inside knowledge.

Riding the Barossa

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Hi, I'm planning a trip to the Barossa Valley, with the Yetti of course, and was wondering if anyone had inside information on trail rides in the area. I'll be hiring a camper van, so mobility won't be a problem. I'll be looking for cross country tracks so a mixture of single track and dirt roads would be the norm I guess, I am an experienced rider with about 7 years under the belt but not looking for anything too narly… I'm looking to go within the next two months.

Blue STP for my daughter from bits and pieces.

I finished assembling this last night from parts I had lying around, scabbed off ride buddies, bought off rotorburn and a few little ebay items. Its my daughter's new mtb and rather than spend the same amount of money (around $500 including the respray) on something new that is crappy and heavy , I got some better quality 2nd hand parts and put it together.

Frame is a small size STP resprayed at Gripsport beautifully.
