Hot Laps.. any purpose?

Could someone please explain to me the actual purpose of a hot lap? I really, simply don’t get it...is it for training purposes? ego so that people think you are quick? or for self enjoyment/satisfaction?
I find this a funny sport - first of all you have to 'get round' and once you conquer all the bits you used to walk or find hard it then seems you are supposed to ride it as fast as possible...and if you are too slow then clearly you are a 'crap rider' even if you can ride the whole lot - its odd

Bodgy solution required for odometer

Hey all,

I have several odometers but for someone reason none of the bits that go on the wheel.

Is it just a bit of steel wrapped around a clip for the spoke? If so i think I can bodgy something up, has anyone done this before and can recommend common household items fit for purpose?

Thanks!

I see why cyclist get a bad name sometimes

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

It seems at the moment that the age old 'battle' between cyclists and other road users is getting more mainstream media attention, with the 7pm Project rant, the comments by Carl Scully and numerous other mainstream press articles recently. I think part of this is that the media loves a 'buzzword' and right now they see this as an issue that can be divisive (just check the responses to some of the mainstream online articles to see).

New bike choice

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Apologies for another 'which bike' thread ...

Seriously considering a new bike. What I'm after is a bike suited to endurance events, nice and light, efficient climber but able to descend well too. I think I am probably a bit more XC than all-mountain but would like to be able to do as much as possible with one bike.

Forget the invisible part... how'd they teach their cat to ride a bike? Laughing out loud

No hunting please

Can you believe this?

Don't think we want to see these signs in Australian National Parks do we? Or anywhere else for that matter.

bike rack

I want a new bike rack to put on the tow bar. I want both wheels supported on something (the one i already have the bike is just supported from the frame and if stop too hard it hits the car) and if it tilts so i can still open the back of the car with the bike on the rack even better, but not a prerequisite.
I have seen the Thule ones but the cheapest is 400$. Does any one have a tip on where to get them cheaper? it doesn't have to be Thule though.
Cheers

Lost Garmin Edge 305 Cycle computer/GPS near Manly Dam.

I lost my computer while putting my bike into my car at Bangaroo Street, North Balgowlah on Friday November 6. If anyone has found it, would you please contact me. I would love to get this back and I'm happy to reward the finder for its return.

Thanks

The War on Cyclists and Pedestrians is Getting Ugly

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

CB's Mixed Feelings sprang to mind when I saw this just now:

http://www.treehugger.com/files/2009/10/the-war-...

This article notes,

All over the world right now, there is a war on cyclists and pedestrians.

And if a Texan politician can even notice this...

"Right now, if the driver of a motor vehicle destroys private property, they have to make amends," said state Sen. Leticia Van de Putte, D-San Antonio. "If you destroy life, that is not the case. ... It's just called an accident."

Newbie looking for advice on Alex Ace 17 rims

Just wondering if anyone has any advice on Alex Ace 17rims with Shimano LX M585 hubs to replace a set of Alex DM 24 (too heavy). I have done some searching on the web but can't find any reviews. I am 95kgs and on a wife imposed budget and have found a set for about $170 but wondering if I should be looking at something else that may be better value

Mixed feelings

Just read this articel on bikeradar

http://www.bikeradar.com/commuting/news/article/...

Interesting mixed feelings. When I first read the article I thought 'good, at least they jailed the moron'..... then reading the comments, I began thinking that they were absolutely right. Attempted premeditated murder and only 3 years in jail. Scandalous.

I think my initial thoughts were based on the subconcious kmowledge that if it happened in Sydney, the moron wouldn't have gone to jail at all.....

Northbridge BMX track Sailors Bay Rd, (near golf course & tennis courts)

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Hi all, please give your support ...

I am currently involved, along with a few other locals, in transforming the BMX dirt jump track to a "Pump" track.
At present the track is in a state of disrepair & neglect due to lack of maintenance, therefore not completely safe or practical for general use, especially for younger children.

There is already a Dirt Jump track at Castle Cove, nearby.

We have had a meeting with the "Parks & Reserves Co ordinator" from Willoughby Council to discuss converting this space to a "Pump" track which will cater for the local community to provide a safe, practical working bike track for people of all ages, skill & ability.

The "Parks & Reserves Co ordinator" has asked us to drum up as much support as possible by sending him an email, outlining benefits of a Pump track.

German cyclist sets Australian crossing world record

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

This is absolute insanity:

German cyclist Guido Kunze set a new world record after crossing southern Australia by bicycle, covering 4,200 kilometres in seven days, 19 hours and 5 minutes

http://www.bikeradar.com/news/article/german-cyc...

There's more here:

http://www.shimano.com.au/publish/content/global...

So that's 4200km in near enough 187 hours. Including stops it's 22km/h average!

Bike travel bags

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

For anyone who doesn't know me:

My name is Alex Wagner, 17y/o, School Student in Blue Mountains. I have been racing MTB's for around 7 years now.
I have achieved some pretty good results, around Australia and also overseas, New Caledonia.

Back on topic:

I'm preparing to do the 2009/10 National MTB Series. The first round is in Glenorchy, Tasmania.
The only way of getting there is by plane, my problem is I don't have anyway of taking my bike onto the
plane safely. Does anyone have or know of anyone who would be able to lend me a bike bag, box etc?

Dr Seuss Response to NPA

I saw this on the net and loved it. It's how Dr Seuss would respond to the National Parks Association (think Green Eggs and Ham).

Do you like my mountain-bike?
Do you like it? Do you, Mike?

I do not like your mountain-bike.
Leave it home! Go for a hike!
Too many gears! Enormous treads!
You rip my favorite trails to shreds!
You may not ride it here or there,
You may not ride it anywhere!

May I ride on single-track
with all my gear in camelbak?

You may not ride on single-track
with mountain bike or camelbak
And do not ride on fire-road,
It cannot take the overload.

Crank Brothers Iodine Wheelset

Looking at some new wheels for the Yeti.

Love the look of the Crank Brothers Iodine Wheelset. Anybody had some hands on experience with these wheels.

I mainly ride XC, enduro stuff , no major drops etc. For the $$$ I am expecting a top quality wheelset, both reasonably light weight, but will take some hits.

Feedback appreciated.
