Manly Dam update for 18 Apr
Area:
Manly Dam
Status:
Red/Closed Judging by the fact that there is a new waterfall running down my backyard and I live down the road from the Dam, I am going to call it Red even though I have not been for a ride (would anyone need to with all this rain?!).
Do you have more information?
If you've ridden here lately please add a more recent report. This will be useful even if the condition is the same as updates expire after 30 days.
Please do not post comments with such information - post a new update with the link above.

I think I'll 2nd that.
but its already been changed
Facebook update confirms it is officially closed, though only the idiots would think it was even slightly rideable
Whereabouts on FB is this?
www.facebook.com/warringahcouncil?sk=wall and also Twitter twitter.com/#!/mywarringah.
The council have also said in an email a while back that they are no longer going to send the email whe nit is closed/open, they will update Facebook and try to update the council website (they seem to have issues with that sometimes). Shame, as I think having the notice "pushed" to people is a much better way to do it.
Thanks Dave
It's funny, I get the council emails and I was never sent the one about not sending emails anymore, go figure. Council have spent years growing an email list of stakeholders and it is a shame Warringah Council have now severed this line of communication with the MTB community. That said, Council should be congratulated in embracing new channels of communication. Using Facebook and Twitter to update the MTB community is good, however it shouldn't be used exclusively for all communication, rather as part of an ongoing communication strategy.
I agree 'pushed notifications' are far more proactive. Not only for closed/open status but also for works, maintenance and trail advocacy issues too.
As I write that I receive the email from the council of course...
"Maintenance", Phil you make me laugh! Yes, I should curb my negativity but as with a lot of people I am chaffing at the bit to get stuck into the Dam with a shovel, pick and a whole lot of elbow grease.
I had to laugh. They failed to mention what the 'above means' actually are. Bless. I did then email them back and recieved the following:
ok maybe I was getting a bit carried away with the thought of actual maintenance by willing and prepared stakeholders But even council led maintenance or backburning etc would be nice
Talk about setting a low standard and consistently failing to meet it. How long does it take them to send out the email? 20? 30 seconds? of cut/paste/send?
Dear council, I am not going to log in to facebook to check the status. I'm not going to sign up to twitter, either. If you can't be bothered to get the information out there using a tried, true and popular method, I'll just look out the window and asses the weather and hence the track conditions myself.
STFU Council!
pancakes I think that is a very poor attitude!
I agree that there email system over the last few years has been next to useless BUT,
There is alot of hard work going on behind the scenes to try and get legal tracks around the beaches and we dont want to stuff that up.
Mt Annon posts track updates on Facebook all them time and it works really well. They are very active in opening and shutting the track when needed and people respect that and stay off it. Most people have Facebook these days. Seriously with smart phones, ipads, laptops and computers its not that hard to check a trail status!
I am with you VTSS350.
The email has been sent out as a courtesy to those who signed up to the list and to expect it to still happen is a bit rich. We should be greatful that they are willing to even offer an online update service as i am sure there would lots of trails that dont have it
Would you prefer no facebook update, no website updates and turn up to the trail to find the signs up saying its closed?
Wouldn't it be great if someone would build a website with something like a traffic light system to show what trails are open or closed across an area. Not just from one authority (like Council A, or Council B, or Parks, etc) but from all trails in an area. Wouldn't that be a whole lot better than expecting riders to visit numerous other websites or social networking pages to figure out what's going on? What would be even better is that if various authorities could get behind such an effort rather than trying to confuse things and run with their own agenda. Wow, wouldn't that be great?!
<sigh>
Is that an app or something? Is that on the iTunes Store?
that's so crazy it could work!
We're in full agreement, Rob! I think maybe leaving the council out of the process may be the answer, lol.
As a rate payer in the Warringah council LGA and an end user of the facilities I don't think it's too much to expect them to communicate the status, even if it was on a page on the council website. Fundamentally, could someone explain the difference between them emailing or tweeting? Same message, different method. Not everyone wants to be on twitter.
Why the push for social networking sites only? The cynic in me tells me it's a council policy to in some way up their hits/mine data/increase online profile.
Another number that would be interesting to know is what percentage of the people who ride the dam actually even know or care about what the "status" is? Out of the 5 or 6 guys I ride with I think I'm the only one on the list.
And how a dissenting view on how information is delivered affects trail advocacy issues is beyond me...
...we need an app for this.
Why not do teh same for the Dam?

I replied to them on Facebook asking for a page and there is one, its apparently hard to find. They are rebuilding the website and will be making it easier to find
