Manly Dam update for 22 Sep

Area:
Manly Dam
Status:
Green/Open All Good - very quiet at 9am this morn.
No Birdy issues - I had my head down and waving my hand in front of my face and trouble free. A guy coming up the other way thought I was waving at him and waved back - mountain bikers are a friendly lot

Had heard the rumours so was on the lookout. A momentary lapse of concentration, then BOOM, butcher got me on the nose and drew blood.
Other than that the trail is in great condition. Get out there and ride!
The Butcher bird is innocent! They don't attack like this. It would have been a Magpie.
Are you sure?
So far as I know, maggies don't have that little hook on the end of the beak, and are black/white, not grey. I've managed to miss the Gibbs St one so far, but there is one at Stanley St Willoughby that has a go when I commute through there during nesting season. They're smart birds, entirely possible that it's learned behaviour. WhenI was looking up magpie behaviour last year, I came across citations that said butcher birds have been known to mimic this aspect of magpie behaviour.
It's a Grey Butcher. Most definitely not a magpie. If you look closely at its plumage you'll notice a number of little mountain bike stencils indicating it's confirmed kills.
It's not a magpie, looks more like a small king fisher type bird, smaller than a kookaburra. Consensus on the site say Butcher Bird so I'm going with that.
Def a Butcher, saw him with my own eyes, we had a stand off
